The Firearms Research Center’s 13th Virtual Seminar featured Walk the Talk America (WTTA) CEO Michael Sodini and Board Member and Marriage and Family Therapist Jake Wiskerchen on practical, rights-respecting approaches to suicide prevention. They discussed why most firearm deaths are suicides, how stigma and fear of losing rights can deter gun owners from seeking care, and what culturally competent practice looks like in real clinics and communities. The conversation highlighted WTTA’s free and anonymous mental health screenings, clinician training on firearms cultural competence, “time and space” voluntary storage strategies, and local partnerships connecting gun shops with trusted providers.
