Dr. Ed Seidel has been the 28th President of the University of Wyoming since July 1, 2020. He is a distinguished physicist and computer scientist, known internationally for scientific excellence, bold vision and dynamic and collegial leadership.

As part of his veto of House Bill 0125 during the 2024 legislative session, which would have allowed for anyone lawfully carrying a concealed weapon to do so on public property, including the university, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon charged state agencies, including UW, to “take up these difficult conversations again and establish policies that allow for the safe carry of concealed weapons within their facilities.”
To respond to the Governor’s directive, the university conducted a campus-wide survey of preferences and discussed this topic during the September 2024 Board of Trustees meeting. I recognize this is a sensitive issue for many and I thank you for your thoughtful participation thus far. We are continuing our exploration of the potential of firearms on campus, and I invite you attend the following events hosted by the Firearms Research Center.
- A Webinar on November 14 from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. will educate participants on a draft rule that would allow for permitted carry on certain facilities on campus. RSVP here.
- A Town Hall meeting on November 18 from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in the Union West Ballroom and via WyoCast will feature a panel, including myself, of experts on the topic of firearms on campus and will provide opportunity for Q&A
It is important to note that as UW explores the possibility of firearms on campus, the decision is ultimately up to the UW Board of Trustees. The Trustees plan to address this topic during their November 2024 Board meeting and I encourage you to attend.
